Kick-off meeting

On 24 February 2026, the ThromboRisk consortium officially launched the project at its  Kick-off meeting, marking the start of a new European collaboration dedicated to advancing multi-level thrombosis risk modelling. The meeting brought together representatives from academic institutions, clinical partners, and industry organisations participating in the network, laying the foundations for the scientific, training, and organisational activities that will guide the project in the coming years.

The programme began with welcoming remarks from the project coordinator at Eindhoven University of Technology, followed by an introduction from the Project Officer at the European Research Executive Agency (REA).

During the morning session, the consortium presented the project’s overall vision and integrated workplan, outlining how ThromboRisk will combine computational modelling, experimental research, clinical data, and artificial intelligence to improve understanding and prediction of thrombosis across biological scales.

A central feature of the project is its interdisciplinary multiscale framework, which links cellular mechanisms, thrombus formation, and circulation-level dynamics through advanced modelling approaches. The scientific work is organised into interconnected work packages that address cell-level, thrombus-level, and circulation-level modelling, as well as AI-driven multi-level integration, ensuring continuous exchange of knowledge and data across research domains.

The project is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network, designed to train a new generation of researchers capable of tackling complex biomedical challenges. The consortium discussed the structure of the doctoral training programme, which is based on Challenge-Based Learning (CBL), an experiential approach in which doctoral candidates develop their research projects by addressing real clinical or societal challenges in collaboration with academic, clinical, and industrial partners.

In addition to scientific and training activities, dedicated sessions addressed project coordination and management, communication and dissemination strategies, stakeholder engagement, and exploitation of results.

The meeting concluded with a discussion of the next steps for the first year of the project, including recruiting doctoral candidates, establishing governance structures and committees, and preparing upcoming training activities and collaborative research initiatives. The ThromboRisk consortium now begins its work to improve the understanding and prediction of thrombosis, contributing to better prevention and treatment strategies for cardiovascular diseases.
